Icons are good to have to represent your program or folder. They are used on the desktop to represent the different file types or program types. It is good to have an icon to associate with a file type because it gives you information such as which program can be used to open that particular file. For instance, the MS Word files have a blue ‘W’ written in a blue square as their icon.

Often for your personal folders or programs you might need to create an icon of your own. Icon files have the .ico extension. You can easily convert normal image files like .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .png or .bmp files into icons, i.e. put them in .ico format. There is lots of free software on the Interent which allow users to convert files. One of them is: Image 2 Icon Converter 2.2, which can be downloaded free from here. It is a fairly small download and the software is easy to use.

Another great option (if you do not want to download anything) is to have your icons created for you online. The Free Online Favicon Icon Generator does just that. If you get to this link, you’ll see that the Icon generator will first ask you to upload an image file. On doing so, it goes to step 2 in which you have to select the size of the Icon you want to create. Once that’s done, you just have to generate it, download it and use it as you please. It’s quite simple.

Why don’t you head over to this online icon generator and give it a shot? Lets see if it’s able to produce quality icons from your image files! Let us know what happened and if you were able to get your .ico files…hope this tip was helpful! Nice day!

In one of my earlier posts I talked about how to convert any file into PDF. In this one, I’ll show you how to convert PDF files into Word documents. Since a PDF file is meant to be non-editable, tools like a PDF-to-Word converter become very useful. You cannot manipulate the text in a PDF file and it’s much easier to do so in Word, e.g. exporting the content of the Word document into a spreadsheet.

The best software to convert PDF files is the free PDF to Word Doc Converter v1.1, which can be downloaded from here. Its a small-sized .exe file, easy to install. The software is user-friendly and just takes a few minutes to convert the files, regardless of how big the PDF version of the file is.

When you open the program, all you need to do is to specify the .pdf that you want to convert, and the location of where you want the .doc file to be saved. Then click on the Convert to Word Document button and wait. After a few minutes it will open the .doc version of your file, which you can then edit and use.

I hope this tip was helpful. If you use this software, tell me what you think about it and if there’s something else out there that beats this one!

Are your bored of looking at the same old XP desktop with a big green start button at the bottom of the page? Windows Vista looks really nice with its major GUI updates. There’s lots of cool software out there to change the look of your XP desktop. Make it look like Windows Vista, whilst not having to buy the Vista software.

One such program is the Vista Transformation Pack 9.01, which you can download for free from here! This is a really cool thing to download – it will change the start button and task bar and give it a nice Vista look. It adds the side bar and object dock gadgets where you can add your own shortcuts to make it easier to access your files. It also adds a visual tool tip that displays when you roll the mouse over the open programs in the taskbar.

Along with that, it will change the login screens to a nice green – the vista way! Go ahead and install the software…update your old XP GUI and make your computer look fab!
