If you set up a browser homepage then every time you open the browser, it will automatically open up your homepage, eg. setting it to http://www.google.com will open the Google page every time you open the browser. Setting up your browser homepage is very easy.

If you’re using Internet Explorer, then drive your mouse to the menu and click on Tools->Internet Options. When the dialog box pops up, click on the text box under ‘Home Page’ in the General tab and just type in your wanted url. Then hit ok! Done! Check out the screenshot below to guide you.

If you’re using FireFiox, then from the menu, click on Tools->Options…and set your homepage from the ‘Main’ tab. See the picture below:

See how easy that was? It’s nice to have the browser automatically open the page(s) you use most frequently. Saves time after you open the program because you don’t have to manually open new tabs and point the browser to your pages you want to visit!

Have you ever wondered what people are saying about you, your brands, your competitors or your company – online? There are loads of discussion forums, blogs and other websites that talk about your brand and you…imagine having to Google for information about yourself and browsing through the thousands of websites to read about such stuff!

Brandwatch technology is the best I’ve come across to track your online reputation on the web. It works for anyone since you can track data on the Internet using keywords of your choice, and then read what people are saying about you. Brandwatch uses its own search engine to crawl the web and gather content about any given topic, then with the use of Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing, it analyzes the collected data and labels it with a sentiment; positive for good and negative for bad.

If you want to know in detail how this actually works, take a look at this. It’s very interesting and will give you an insight on a completely different use of technology. Brandwatch gives you a full analysis of your brand, represented using graphs. It’s a really powerful tool and quite impressive too.

Have a look at their website and see what you think about it! Do you know of any other social-media analytics software out there that can be used to track your brands? Hope you find this one useful!

The Winner is always a part of the answer; The Loser is always a part of the problem

The Winner always has a plan; The Loser always has an excuse

The Winner says, “Let me do it for you”; The Loser says, “That’s not my job”

The Winner sees an answer in every problem; The Loser sees a problem in every answer

The Winner says, “It may be difficult but it’s possible”; The Loser says, “It may be possible but its difficult”

… Have a splendid positive day!!

A 1st grade school teacher had twenty-five students in her class. She presented each child in her classroom the 1st half of a well-known proverb and asked them to come up with the remainder of the proverb. It’s hard to believe these were actually done by 1st graders. Their insight may surprise you. While reading, keep in mind that these are first-graders, 6-year olds, because the last one is a classic!!

When you have a very large Word or PDF document, and you want to look for a particular string of words, imagine scrolling down through all the pages or through the table of contents and guessing which page out of hundreds of them might just be the right one you need at that time!!

The most easiest way to perform a search on documents is Ctrl+F. You won’t believe how simple and great this ‘Find’ function is. I’ve used it many times and I always get what I’m looking for. Not only Word or PDF documents, you can also carry out a search on a web page! Go ahead and key in Ctrl+F right now and see what you get! It is a very powerful search tool and also very useful when you’re working with many documents.

Hope this tip was helpful…soon there’ll be a tech tip all about promoting your website for free so look out for it!!

Icons are good to have to represent your program or folder. They are used on the desktop to represent the different file types or program types. It is good to have an icon to associate with a file type because it gives you information such as which program can be used to open that particular file. For instance, the MS Word files have a blue ‘W’ written in a blue square as their icon.

Often for your personal folders or programs you might need to create an icon of your own. Icon files have the .ico extension. You can easily convert normal image files like .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .png or .bmp files into icons, i.e. put them in .ico format. There is lots of free software on the Interent which allow users to convert files. One of them is: Image 2 Icon Converter 2.2, which can be downloaded free from here. It is a fairly small download and the software is easy to use.

Another great option (if you do not want to download anything) is to have your icons created for you online. The Free Online Favicon Icon Generator does just that. If you get to this link, you’ll see that the Icon generator will first ask you to upload an image file. On doing so, it goes to step 2 in which you have to select the size of the Icon you want to create. Once that’s done, you just have to generate it, download it and use it as you please. It’s quite simple.

Why don’t you head over to this online icon generator and give it a shot? Lets see if it’s able to produce quality icons from your image files! Let us know what happened and if you were able to get your .ico files…hope this tip was helpful! Nice day!

Freeing up disk space can improve the speed of your computer. Also, it’s always better to clean up the disks every few months rather than let it store files which are no longer needed. There are many things you can do to free up disk space: First thing to do is to empty your dustbin. Don’t look confused – I meant the Recycle Bin! lol..

Second thing to do, uninstall all the programs you don’t use. You can get a list of the programs which are installed on your machine from the Control Panel. Double-Click on the Add/Remove programs icon and wait for the dialog box to load its contents. From that list, you get options for removing the programs you don’t use. After carrying out this step, it’s always best to navigate to C:/Program Files/ just to check whether the uninstallation left behind any unwanted folders – which you can delete later on.

Third thing: delete all temporary files. These include temporary files related to windows and also Internet Explorer’s temporary files, which take up a lot of space. To locate both these categories of unwanted files all in one place, the simplest thing to do is use the Search function. Click on Start -> Search, then select all files and folders, then type in *.tmp in the textbox and hit Enter. This search string, *.tmp, finds all the files with a .tmp extension, which represent temporary files. As soon as the Search is complete, just select all the files (Ctrl+A) and hit Shift+Del.

Fourth thing to do: Remove all the downloaded program files like Java applets and Microsoft Active X Controls, and Browser Add-ins and Plugins that you don’t use. These just take up little space but when they’re many they can account for a number of megabytes. – Also delete all the files you don’t need – documents, presentations, spreadsheets etc.

And last not but not least, remove the extra Windows components that you don’t use or need. After running through all the above procedures, it’s good to get the hard disk checked for errors and have them repaired if they’re any. Cleaning up the disk is easy – navigate to: Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup. You might be asked if you want the cleanup program to run when you start Windows next time. That’s it…once you’ve done this, you know your hard disk does not carry any garbage and you’ll also see a difference with the speed improvement.

Hope this post was very informative…and enlightening! Have a great day! 😉
